Inspiring Art

Today I went to an exhibit at Heron Arts in San Francisco. The exhibition was called Biophilia, the artist, Pippa Dyrlaga, lives in rural England and she makes incredible works of art from cut paper. She uses a fibrous Japanese paper called washi. Her pieces of art are so detailed and intricate with tiny, tiny cuts. I don’t know how she does it. She must use some kind of magnifying glass and an extremely sharp knife. There are these perfect little repetitive cuts everywhere, it is incredible. The pieces featured flowers, plants, trees, fish, birds and insects. There was even a little abandoned cabin in the woods. Many of the pieces were in shadow box frames so you could see the reflection behind them. Others were freestanding including a few that were suspended from the ceiling. It was magnificent, I just could not get enough of them especially how different they looked when you stood back and looked at them from further away and then got close enough to see the intricate detail. Some were just plain white paper others had been painted in very detailed, precise, exact colors. She must have such a steady hand and good eyesight. It makes me feel so joyful to experience this kind of incredible artwork.

Earlier in the day I took Otis for a walk, we went past some beautiful flowers. It was my last day there, though I’ll be back again next week for a longer stay. I headed home, got resettled and spent some time catching up with mom then finishing my JNE report.

We watched the Giants-As game, the Giants won so Mom was happy. I noticed a guy sitting in the seats just behind home plate – when the A’s were batting, he had on a yellow wig and a green A’s shirt and then when the Giants were at bat, he put on a Giants shirt and an orange wig! I pointed it out to mom and every inning he switched depending on which team was at bat – until the ninth inning when he just kept his Giants gear on. Maybe because the Giants were ahead 2 to 1 and he thought they would win or maybe he was really a Giants fan – who knows? It didn’t seem like the announcers saw his clothes switching because they didn’t call attention to it. Mom was pretty impressed that I noticed since I’m not a big sports fan. I told her that’s probably why I noticed because I wasn’t really watching the game. 😬 I tend to watch what’s going on in the stands as I usually find that a lot more interesting than the game. Sorry Mom, Christina, Michelle, Lisa and all the rest of my family that loves the Giants.
