Camping at Lake Siskiyou

I got to enjoy another adventure with one of my sisters. This time it was with Christina camping at Lake Siskiyou, aka Lake Sis. I had never been there before, I’m sure if we had known about it when the kids were little, we would have spent a lot of time there. It is a wonderful spot to camp, especially if you have kids. There’s a wonderful beach play area with boats and kayaks to rent. The campsites are large, private, and shady. There is a general store that sells soft serve ice cream, a pizza and burger place, an arcade and an outdoor movie theater! That’s not to mention the views of Mt Shasta and the 7 mile walk around the lake and various other hikes nearby, including one to a canyon that used to serve as a disposal area for old cars.

As I mentioned in my previous post, the Root fire had started a few miles away on the day I arrive we arrived. Luckily it was contained fairly quickly, Cal Fire got on it right away, and there was no wind. But we spent the first night ready to evacuate if that was necessary. The second night we were treated to an impressive lightning display and very loud thunder. It did rain that night, but everything dried up pretty quickly the next morning. Hopefully the rain helped fighting the fires and the lightning didn’t start anything new.

We got out for walks around the lake, cooled off in the hot afternoons by swimming in the lake and buried ourselves in our books.

I also hiked the short Box Canyon trail. The views of the canyon are stunning and such a contrast to the remains of the cars and other old items like washing machines that litter the last third of the trail.

Chrissy and Javi got out on her paddle board and we saw the Goodyear blimp go by! During our last trip to the lake we met a family and their sweet dog Ro Ro who was old and fragile, but loved being in the water. We found out it was to be his last hurrah as they were going to put him down later in the day. It was really touching to see them all together with Ro Ro enjoying the water together. A bittersweet end to our trip.
