Old Town Sights

I got up early and went outside to journal, it was a beautiful morning. The B&B serves a very filling and yummy breakfast in the mornings. Stacy and I both tried the caviar in a tube and liked it very much. We made it part of our breakfast routine – Wasa cracker with caviar spread, a slice of cheese, a slice of salami topped with thinly sliced cucumber. We had decided we wanted to stop at the information center and find out about taking a ferry to the archipelago when we come back from our travels. We visited the Gothenburg cathedral, passed by an area with an artisan market, then wound our way around to the fish market, found an amazing secondhand place that was so well organized and also had a free bathroom to use!

We ended up in the Haga district, the oldest part of town and stopped at a café that is known to have the largest kanelbullar in Gothenburg, possibly in Sweden. And it is true, they are gigantic! We also picked up a large, gorgeous looking meringue to go with it. Of course our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and we only got halfway through the kanelbullar and didn’t even touch the meringue, so saved them for later. We wandered around Haga, listen to a group of high school girls playing Beatles music, then checked out another beautiful church that caught our attention.

Finally, we headed to Slottsskogen, a beautiful, large park in the city. There was a bookmobile parked near the children’s playground with tables set outside with supplies for book related art projects. Stacy has been an elementary school teacher and reading specialist so of course she was very happy to see that. We got our exercise in walking around the park up to the observation tower, which unfortunately we could not see much from since it was closed and most of the trees around it were too tall to afford much of a view. Next we visited the zoo in the park (free, of course!) It is probably the most natural zoo I have ever seen, it basically looks like the animals are out in nature and there just happens to be wooden fences around their areas. We looked at the goats and the penguins, and were able to see a couple of moose having their lunch. We decided we were ready for our own lunch and we needed to rest our tired feet so we headed to a café in a different part of the park.

Later, we slowly made our way back to the B&B, stopping halfway at an outdoor bar for drinks to help us make it the rest of the way. Over the last two days we had seen lots of people wearing AC/DC regalia and found out that AC/DC was playing a concert in Gothenburg that night. We figured the venue had to be relatively close to where we were staying because we saw more and more AC/DC fans walking that way as we headed home. As we were getting ready for bed, we realized we could hear the opening band playing, and just after 9 o’clock the opening cords to Thunderstruck came through loud and clear! We put on extra layers, grab some blankets, made tea and settled into the comfy chairs in the front yard to enjoy a free AC/DC concert! It was the perfect decibel level for a couple of women in their mid 50s. 😝 They played all our favorites – Back in Black, Hells Bells, TNT and of course, You Shook Me All Night Long. Finally, around 11:30, we went to sleep. What a totally unexpected treat.
