The weather has been all over the place during my time at Kieran‘s house. On Saturday I kept all the blinds closed and the fans on because it was over 90°, but by Monday it only reached the mid 60s and we got rain overnight! Definitely weird weather for May.
It’s been a lot of fun getting to know Kieran‘s dog, Bentley, and cats, Whiskey and Fireball, better. Bentley is obsessed with running after tennis balls, and would do it forever, like my sisters dog Javi. Bentley has been showing me around the neighborhood on our twice daily walks. Whiskey likes to come sit on my lap and cuddle, she especially loves being scratched behind the ears. Fireball on the other hand hides the whole day, either under the bed or inside the covers. She is very shy and the only times I have seen her have been in the middle of the night when I’ve gotten up to go to the bathroom and she’s either been hanging on the curtains or at her food bowl and she streaks away the second she sees me. I knew she was really shy, so this isn’t surprising at all.
I’ve been doing some weeding since Kieran and Kourtney are so busy with work and school, and after the rainy winter the weeds have just gone crazy. It worked out well because I’ll throw the ball to Bentley, pull a couple of weeds, he’ll bring the ball back, I’ll throw it again and continue with my weeding. The backyard looks much better now and Bentley got more exercise (and loves his grandma).
I’ve been getting to know Kieran‘s neighborhood as well. It is a working class neighborhood where lots of people own trucks, so I can see why it appealed to Kieran. It’s so interesting how different all three of my kids are, and that’s reflected in where they live. Emmy lives in a sweet little house in a nice little suburban neighborhood full of families. There are a lot of SUVs and pretty gardens. Kieran’s neighborhood is a little grittier, lots of dogs barking, smaller houses, not as well kept. Annemarie, my arty, alternative kid, lives in a house with many other roommates in a diverse neighborhood in Wellington.
Yesterday, my sister Michelle took a day off work, picked me up and took me on a beautiful hike at the Auburn State Recreation Area. We timed it pretty well, the rain poured down on our way there and on our way back, but during the walk we only got sprinkled on a little bit. The unsettled weather and the fact that it was mid week meant we only met a couple people on the trail, which was wonderful. We also saw quite a few salamanders, who must have been very happy with the rain. The drive out there was really nice as well, so green and quiet. Michelle treated me to burgers and onion rings at a place called Burgers and Cream which used to be a Fosters Freeze, but then the owners decided to part ways with the franchise when they wanted to make better food. I was glad they did, as the patty melt I had was very yummy. I treated myself to a chocolate dipped waffle cone, something I haven’t had in a long time, and it was only two dollars because of their Tuesday special on soft serve ice cream!
