Alice Walker’s Poetry

I spent another day indoors, trying to kick this cold. I’ve become a big fan of a concentrate drink called simply ‘lemon, ginger & honey’. It feels so good on my throat, and unlike coffee, doesn’t keep me up at night. Annemarie dropped off supplies for me including homemade bagels, yummy!

One of the ponga (silver fern) trees outside has several new fronds getting ready to unfurl. I love how they look all curled up and ready to burst forth.

Today I read a book of poetry by Alice Walker called Horses Make A Landscape Look More Beautiful. Here are a couple of the poems that called to me:

Love Is Not Concerned

love is not concerned

with whom you pray

or where you slept

the night you ran away

from home

love is concerned

that the beating of your heart

should kill no one.

We Alone

We alone can devalue gold

by not caring

if it falls or rises

in the marketplace.

Wherever there is gold,

there is a chain, you know,

and if your chain

is gold,

so much the worse

for you.

Feathers, shells

and sea-shaped stones

are all as rare.

This could be our revolution:

To love what is plentiful

as much as

what’s scarce.
