Heading Home, Celebrating Mom’s Birthday

It was my last morning on the mountain, had a long leisurely time sipping coffee and watching the sunrise again this morning. And it got me wondering what sunrises and sunsets will be like when I am in New Zealand, I don’t remember much about them when I lived there. I suppose in my early 20s that wasn’t high on my priority list, I guess I will find out next week!

It was a cooler, cloudy day today, which made for serene vistas as I hiked back to my car, load much lighter because I’d eaten most of the food I brought up. When I got back home I had to start the onerous task of figuring out what to take with me to New Zealand (I know, life is rough!). Luckily they are heading into summer, so I can bring lighter clothes, but Wellington‘s weather is a lot like San Francisco’s, except windier and cooler, so I definitely still need to bring warm gear as well.

Today is my mom’s 87th birthday, and her phone didn’t stop ringing with people wishing her a happy birthday. She talked to her twin sister who lives in Kentucky and they got caught up on family happenings (mainly about grandkids of course!). One of Mom’s many nephews and his wife were in town after attending a wedding in Las Vegas and spending some time in Yosemite, they came out to dinner with some of the family at Mom’s favorite restaurant, the Cantina. We heard stories from Mom’s youth, including how she and her twin sister smoked cigarettes when they were 6 years old with an older 8 year old friend. Scandalous!
